Founded in March of 1980, Music For Young Children was developed out of a desire to create a program that would fulfill the need for quality music education tailored to the strenghts and abilities of young children.
Today, MYC has more than 24000 students annually, 900 teachers and is taught on 3 continents. More than 400,000 students have attended MYC classes. Over time the curriculum has been refined, reviewed and mastered to ensure that it is consistent and current with conservatories and the music industry. Through it all, the core principles and dream has remained the same: Music is a gift that lasts a lifetime, and that all children and families deserve quality music education. |

Children are the center of MYC; their learning styles and needs are met through a multi-sensory approach. The understanding of music expands into positive problem-solving skills, areas of self-expression, the growth of memory skills and excellent self-confidence and self-esteem. All MYC programs cover material designed for the developmental learning abilities appropriate to the age of the children in the program. The curriculum for each level is carefully geared and paced to the abilities and learning styles for that particular age.
Parent participation in the studio is integral to the MYC program. By being present, parents become aware of their child’s learning styles, strengths and interests. And they can serve as informed guides in choosing further musical study. Parent participation in the program also allows reinforcement of concepts and skill-building at home. Parents see how the concepts are presented, and learn how to reinforce the ideas at home. Parent help during the classes is critical to the program; young children need guidance to find pages and someone to point during the rhythm ensembles. Also, the presence of a parent provides stability and security for the child, for whom this may be the first structured experience. |
Sunrise (Ages 2-3)
This exciting and innovative pre-school music program teaches singing, rhythm, ear training, pattern recognition, and music vocabulary. Teddy bears are used as one of the learning 'tools'. Stories, songs and games are all included in this carefully developed curriculum. Sunrise differs from the other MYC programs, because it doesn’t include a piano component.

Sunshines (Age 3-4)
Large muscle co-ordination is developed through fun beat and rhythm games and fine motor development is encouraged through rhythm instrument ensemble playing. By the end of the first year, Sunshine students will be playing in C major and middle C positions on the piano and they will be reading notes on the staff. Pre-reading experiences – such as pattern recognition through the use of colorful visual aids - are also part of the program.

Sunbeams (Age 5-6)
Songs and games introduce musical concepts, finger numbers, piano geography, and reinforce listening skills. Lessons include large and small muscle movement activities and rhythm instrument ensemble training. By the end of the first year, Sunbeams will be note reading and playing short pieces and scales on the piano, with harmonization, in the keys of C major, a minor, and G major.
|
Moonbeams (Age 7-9)
Songs, ensembles, and piano repertoire are designed to support Moonbeam students’ desire for quick results. The listening activities for this age group keep the ears open, even though note reading becomes a primary focus. Music vocabulary, scales, harmonization, transposition, and composition are all included in the curriculum.
