Piano,

Not starting formal
lessons until she was almost 16, Newella came late to the study of
piano. In just eighteen months she had completed her grade 8 Royal Conservatory of Music
examination. Newella continued her private piano and theory studies
under the tutelage of first Virginia Mathews, and then Terrence
Kroetsch, and has since completed RCM grade 10 piano and grade 3
theory.
Some months after completing the RCM grade 8 examination, Newella started a private teaching career which has thus far spanned 20 years. She has a positive and upbeat approach to teaching, and loves watching her students' self confidence as musicians and people grow as their skill level does the same. Newella believes that hard work can be fun with the right motivation, and as such encourages her students to explore whatever styles of music they find inspiring - both within and outside their lessons. She has a great deal of experience preparing students for RCM practical and theory examinations, as well as the Kiwanis Music Festival, in which she has participated as both a competitor and an accompanist. Newella has performed both as a church musician at various churches throughout Kitchener-Waterloo for many years, and also as an accompanist for choirs and solo vocalists and instrumentalists in the area. Newella joined the Sound Factory Music School faculty in the fall of 2012.
