Mike has dedicated his life to the art of music. He is a versatile multi-instrumentalist, coming by it honestly having grown up in a family of musicians that including Canadian country stars The Mercey Brothers. Mike actively wrote, toured and recorded with recording artists "The Sourkeys" between 2001 and 2007. While touring North America with the band, he played on the same bill with notable artists such as The Rheostatics, King Cobb Steelie, The Constantines, City and Colour, Alexisonfire and members of The Arcade Fire. The Sourkeys have been featured on CBC radio and in Exclaim! Magazine. He is currently involved in his most recent project, Joeb, as well as working as a sideman for a variety of other artists. He also owns and operates a private recording studio and produces recordings from a wide variety of bands in many different genres.
In addition to more than a decade of experience in a touring band, Mike has studied with the Royal Conservatory of Music, privately with noted instructor Gary Tomlin, and in the prestigious percussion program at Humber College. He has been teaching percussion and guitar since the fall of 2006, and teaches all skill levels to students of all ages. In his approach to guitar, Mike teaches reading, rhythm, chords and scales as they relate to the study of song, as well as specializing in flat picking techniques used in modern rock. Mike's approach to teaching percussion/drums starts with a thorough understanding of reading and snare drum rudiments. He teaches many various styles including jazz, latin and rock, as well as keyboard percussion. Mike joined the faculty at the Sound Factory Music School in the summer of 2012, and is the coordinator of our Rock Band group program. |
