Gayathri Premkumar is a native of Tamil Nadu, India. She started learning music at the age of seven under Ms. Kavitha, and continued under the tutelage of Guru Anaimalai Kalaisudarmani Sri. R. Gnanaprakasam. Her first Carnatic performance was at the age of 11, and she has since performed extensively for more than a decade throughout her home province and has received many prizes, awards and scholarships. She has completed 4 grades of Indian Carnatic music(vocal) offered by bridge academy and also completed lower grade Tamilnadu Technical Examination for music(vocal). Currently she is completing her Bachelor's degree in music (B. Music) at Madras university and taking music classes for children in Tamil Nadu.
Gayathri possesses a firm work ethic and attention to detail; in addition to her B.Mus degree she has also completed Bachelor's Degrees in Biomedical Engineering and Hindi Literature, and her Master's in Business Administration, and is an avid (and awarded) dancer, designer and graphic artist. She has a passion for promoting Carnatic music globally, and.helping to create budding artists. Gayathri joined the Sound Factory Music School faculty in the fall of 2016 after relocating to Waterloo from her home in India. .
