Douglas Scott's teaching is based on the philosophy that music gives us a way to learn about ourselves, the world, and how we connect to others. He has been teaching for over 20 years and has written methods for flute and voice as well as music theory training and analysis apps. Aside from teaching the flute, he also teaches vocals, piano, beginner ukulele and beginner guitar.
Doug started music lessons on piano from an early age under the tutelage of his mother and later went on to be a chorister at the Drakensberg Boys' Choir School before finishing his schooling as a student at the National School of the Arts in Johannesburg, South Africa. As a young soloist, his performances include appearances with the South African National Symphony Orchestra and the Johannesburg Symphony Orchestra. He has also participated successfully in many national and international competitions for flute and for vocal ensemble. Latterly, Doug has done extensive amateur theatre work as an actor, musician, and director in Singapore and South Africa. He holds a PhD in music from the University of the Free State, a MMus (flute performance) from UNISA, a BMus (flute performance) from the University of Pretoria, as well as an MBA from Edinburgh Business School. He is currently a Junior Research Fellow at Wilfrid Laurier University's Manfred and Penny Conrad Institute for Music Therapy Research. Doug has been teaching at the Sound Factory Music School since September, 2021. |
